Last week when we went to our country place to mow and work in the garden we discovered a bird had laid an egg in the middle of our driveway! It is the craziest thing I've ever seen! The egg looks like a rock and the mother bird had just cleared a small area and there it was. We placed a big rock by the nest so we would hopefully not run over it.
Well, to our surprise, we arrived at the lodge Saturday and went to check out the nest and low and behold there were four eggs! The mama bird goes nuts and chases us every time we get near the nest, but IT'S IN THE MIDDLE OF OUR DRIVEWAY!! It is very comical. My Mr. Small Town got an orange cone, yep like they use on the roads, and placed it by the nest so that hopefully it will survive until the babies hatch. Lord only knows how long that will take, but I sure hope we get to see them.
I am told this bird is called Killdeer's. I've never heard of them and I've never seen birds nest their eggs in rocks. I guess there is a first time for everything!
Hopefully I'll be able to share the babies next week.
Until we meet again...
